Upgrading the Ori M10 Superlight

Introduction

A bit of infos about upgrading the Ori M10 Superlight folding bike.

The Ori originates in the UK where it was designed by Formula 1 engineer Jon Whyte and sold under the Mezzo brand there (Italian for "half"); The ATB site points to the Mezzo site… which is gone. The bike is now only sold by Ori from Taiwan… and barely available outside Asia .

Sold with a Shimano Nexus 8 gear hub, real fenders, a Klickfix stem bag, and below £€$1,000, it's a worthy alternative to a six-speed Brompton, although its stem prevents a  frame-mounted front bag.

As to whether Ori will keep producing that bike… In June 2022, the webpage hasn't been updated since 2017, Facebook since October 2020, and "I met the Ori folks at their booth at the Taipei International Cycle Show in 2011 and they didn't seem so entirely confident in their brand. I'm surprised it's still around frankly." ( Source )

Replacing the rear derailleur with a Shimano Nexus 8 internal gear hub

Three-speed IGHs from Shimano or SRAM might interfere with the full slotting in of the front mudguard strut into the Sockal clip due to their external clickbox, but other IGHs might be fine (eg. Nexus/Alfine 8/11.) If so, try to bend a mending plate to hold the cllip.

Ori used to sell the Mi8 City , that had a Nexus IGH , but current setup of the M8 use a derailleur (Close-ups: 1 and 2 ).

Front bag

Since the low-rider front rack is gone, the only way to have a bag in the front is to either hang it from the handlebar, or from the stem using a Klickfix adapter. Could take advantage of stem to rest part of the weight.

Wobbly handlebar

Open the front clamp, and slightly tighten one or both small grub screws .

"This isn't a design fault, it needs a simple bit of adjusting. There is an allen head grub screw in either side of the clip, simply tighten each one by a small amount and check the fit and repeat as necessary. Page 27 of the manual, downloaded from the Mezzo web site, describes how to make the adjustment."

Even then, it might still be wobbly. Structural issue?

Replacing the wheels on the carrier

The wheels that come with carrier are not very efficient when pushing the bike folded over uneven concrete → Brompton eazy wheels.
